Abstract
Based on empirical evidence, aberrant driving behaviors, which are often due to socio-cognitive, psycho-social factors, and job-related issues, may have a direct or indirect effect on the occurrence of accidents. On the one hand, truck drivers spend considerable amounts of time on roads and highways due to their types of occupation. Consequently, they are more exposed to driving risks, accidents, and aggressive driving behaviors. This study evaluates the effect of the psychological parameter (driving anger) on the occurrence of aberrant driving behaviors among truck drivers. To conduct this study, a questionnaire is first designed using the standard Driving Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) and Driving Anger Scale (DAS) along with demographic information of drivers. Thereafter, the questionnaires are distributed among 520 truck drivers in East Azerbaijan province, and the necessary data are collected. After evaluating the factor structure of the questionnaires and confirming their reliability, the correlation analysis is performed between drivers' demographic characteristics and dimensions of driving anger with driving behavior subscales. The results indicate a significant and positive relationship between all anger factors (aggressive behaviors, police presence, illegal driving, traffic obstructions) and driving behavior subscales (slips, errors, aggressive violations, and ordinary violations). According to correlation analysis, the driving experience variable is significantly and positively correlated with all driving behavior subscales, while the drivers' age variable has a significant and negative correlation with aggressive and ordinary violation factors. Finally, a multiple linear regression model is built for each of the driving behavior subscales (as dependent variables) based on driving anger factors (as independent variables) to predict the occurrence of aberrant driving behaviors.
