Abstract
This study investigates the influence of train speed on the settlement and dynamic response of an embankment constructed over fine-grained soils while evaluating the effectiveness of cement stabilization as a ground improvement method. A two-dimensional finite element model of the embankment–subgrade system was developed using PLAXIS 2D and validated against laboratory test results. A parametric sensitivity analysis was then conducted to examine the effects of train speed, water-to-cement ratio, sand-to-cement ratio, and embankment thickness on subgrade settlement and vibration response The results demonstrate that cement stabilization significantly reduces vertical deformation and improves the dynamic performance of fine-grained railway subgrades compared with untreated soils. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the water-to-cement ratio, sand-to-cement ratio, and embankment thickness are the dominant factors controlling settlement and vibration behavior. Furthermore, increasing train speed within the investigated range does not produce a linear increase in settlement. Instead, the dynamic response is governed by the combined effects of train speed, the geotechnical properties of the foundation soils, and the characteristics of the cement-stabilized layer. These findings provide a scientific basis for the design and optimization of high-speed railway subgrades constructed on fine-grained soils, particularly along the Isfahan–Tehran HSR corridor in the Vezvan–Meymeh–Qorqchi section.
