Measuring the Key Factors on Satisfaction Level of Residence in Neighborhoods Adjacent to Metro Stations

Abstract

Metro is one of the most efficient public transportation modes. In a city such as Tehran, despite increasing restrictive measures of automobile use, such as introduction of traffic prohibited zone and entrance based on plate number, as well as renovation of bus fleet, the option of urban rail transportation is inevitable. Metro, along its positive effects in improving the urban transportation of Tehran, had some negative social, traffic, physical and environmental effects on the metro station adjacent neighborhoods and had confronted their residents with some problems.
Social problems including transformations in social structures, penetration of non-locals into neighborhoods,… along with problems in terms of traffic including increase in local traffic and disruption of environmental pleasantness, increase in noise pollution, curb parking and reduction of movement safety in neighborhoods had effects on residential satisfaction levels of the residents in neighborhoods adjacent to metro stations.
The aim of this article is to review the affective factors on the satisfaction of residence in neighborhoods after introduction of metro stations, including personal characteristics of metro users (gender, sex, education, length of residence, distance from metro station) and indices of social and traffic conditions to provide a predictive model to measure the satisfaction level of local residence based on them.
For this purpose using questionnaire techniques, field data was collected and analyzed for hypothesis testing. In this study, two stations, Sharif University and Science and Technology University were selected and 160 residents of adjacent neighborhoods responded to questionnaires.
The results of this model show that gender and sex indices among personal characteristics and transformation in socio-physical indices due to introduction of metro stations had affected residential satisfaction levels within neighborhoods.
