The strategies to improve attitude and increase users’ tendency for cycling in urban trips (Case study: Qom city)

Abstract

Various factors are effective in choosing the way of doing daily trips, which can be changed gradually by applying different measures and policies. In recent years, urban planning has gone towards creating incentive policies to increase citizens' use of bicycles instead of motor vehicles, which requires understanding the behavior of citizens when faced with bicycles. In this study, the research-oriented questionnaire among 1707 citizens of Qom city was completed both in person and online by the citizens, and the validation of the Likert scale questions with Cronbach's alpha coefficient equal to 0.793 has an acceptable consistency. The results showed that only 20.5% of the citizens were confident and comfortable about the safety of the road while cycling. In this way, 43% of parents are worried about their children using bicycles and 23% of parents allow their children to use bicycles due to the low safety of bicycles. As a result, this research, by providing solutions in four general sections, including increasing the safety of cyclists, changing The mentality of citizens toward cyclists, the per capita increase of bicycle ownership, and solving the problems of bicycle use have been to improve the attitude and increase the desire of citizens to ride bicycles in intra-city trips in Qom city.
