Abstract

Transportation play a key role in economy in all countries, hence should be reliable and efficient transportation systems that lead us with the least costs to our goals. With increase of cargo and freight transportation demand, it’s essential to provide a solution to increase the capacity of railway network. One of the best solutions to increasing the capacity of rail transport is heavy-haul trains. These transport systems have certain requirements and specifications this model has been deployed in many developed countries because of its economic advantage. Considering that Iran is a rich source of raw mineral materials, demand of transportation of this materials, between mines and processing plants increases. Therefore, a heavy-haul train that is able to supply this high, concentrated demand is a recommended solution. In Iran this method of railway transportation has not been used and the main objective of this thesis is evaluation technical and economical concepts of this system for operating in Iran. In this thesis bafgh- zarinshahr path is selected as a case study, and first the costs and revenues related to the use of heavy-haul trains obtained as a function of the length of the train. Then, using the net present value revenues and costs for a period of 20 years was obtained. Graphs of cost, revenue and profit on the length of the train were drawn based on various scenarios of growth in passenger trains. It was shown that in all cases by increasing the length of the train benefit also increased and the use of these trains is completely economical.
