In this research, 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16% of asphalt binder has been replaced with waste toner powder and the properties such as penetration grade, softening point, ductility, Contact angle and free surface energy components of the binders have been evaluated. Furthermore, porous asphalt and stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mixtures made by asphalt binders containing different dosages of toner have been made and the moisture damage resistance, binder drain-down and Cantabro loss have been evaluated. Also, the energy ratios obtained from free surface energy results of the binders and aggregates have been computed and their correlation with tensile strength ratio (TSR) results has been investigated. Results reveal that penetration grade and ductility of asphalt binder decrease with increasing toner content, up to 12%, beyond which the trend reverses. Evaluation of free surface energy of the binders shows that the total free surface energy increases up to 12% of toner content, beyond which, it decreases with increasing toner content. Cohesion work and adhesion work of asphalt binder and aggregates increase with increasing toner content up to 12%, beyond which they decrease with increasing toner content. Results reveal that tensile strength of asphalt mixtures increases with increasing toner content up to 12%. The effects of toner on the enhancement of porous asphalt tensile strength is more than that of the SMA mixture. Furthermore, the effect of toner on the tensile strength in wet conditioned mixtures is more than that in dry condition. Results reveal that toner addition into asphalt binder enhances the moisture damage resistance of the mixtures with more enhancement for the porous asphalt than the SMA Mixture. Toner addition decreases asphalt drain down in both mixtures and Cantabro loss in porous asphalt. Good correlation was found between the energy ratio parameters and the TSR results for the asphalt mixtures.
