The realization of a sea-based economy development of its ports. In recent years, smartening ports has been recognized as a key pillar of modernization and sustainable coastal infrastructure by leading maritime nations. This research aims to examine the role of smart ports in the infrastructural development and sustainability of Iran’s southern coasts, particularly in the strategic Makran region.



The research methodology is descriptive-analytical, employing an analysis of upstream policy documents, comparative studies, and an examination of successful global experiences to propose appropriate strategies for Iran.



The findings indicate that port smartification, while significantly enhancing logistical productivity and reducing transportation costs, can also improve environmental indicators, strengthen regional competitiveness, and elevate Iran’s standing in the international maritime transportation network. Accordingly, the deployment of modern digital infrastructure, the development of green ports, the intelligent connection of ports to rail and road networks, and the attraction of private investment are identified as key requirements for achieving sustainable development along the country’s southern coasts.
