English

Asphalt mixture is a composite material which contains aggregates, binder, and air voids. The mechanical properties of these subsets affect the cracking growth behavior of asphalt mixture. In the present paper, heterogeneous modeling is used to study cracking growth behavior of asphalt mixture. To reach this goal, at first, numerical samples were created using the aggregate generation and packing algorithm. Then, these samples were simulated using finite element software and the effect of elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratios of both aggregates and mastic parts, , shape and distribution pattern of aggregates, crack tip location, and air void distribution on stress intensity factors were evaluated. It was observed that stress intensity factors obtained from heterogeneous modeling are completely different in comparison with those of homogeneous modeling. When the crack tip was located inside the aggregates, stress intensity factor was greater than those obtained from homogeneous model. On the other hand, if the crack tip was located inside the mastic part, the stress intensity factors was smaller than the homogeneous SCB model. Moreover, the results showed that the crack tip location and elastic modulus of aggregates and mastic parts had significant effects on the magnitude and sign of stress intensity factors. Further, the crack growth path was predicted using the maximum tensile stress criterion. It was observed the aggregates could change the crack growth path locally; however, the general direction of crack growth in heterogeneous and homogeneous modeling was the same.
