In modern societies, urban motorization, particularly in large cities, has created numerous challenges for transportation network users. Various strategies have been proposed to manage supply and demand, including carpooling, which has recently been recognized as an effective approach. In this method, unrelated individuals share a personal vehicle owned by one of them. This article examines user behavior within the transportation network and its impact on carpooling participation. Based on data collected from 326 residents of Tehran and analyzed using structural equation modeling, the results indicate that potential barriers and motivations are directly related to carpooling participation, while current travel behavior factors have a direct impact on the perceived importance of carpooling. The characteristics of ridesharers, such as employment status, income, and trip type (short or long), also significantly influence the perceived importance of factors such as fuel costs and parking. This study serves as a preliminary investigation into the field of carpooling, providing urban managers and policymakers with insights to develop effective strategies for optimizing urban transportation networks.
